You can hire a guide if you want after Pangboche. Till there you can be your own, it is easy to find the route till Tengboche. Everest base camp trek gets tougher after that point if you like to know about everything and do a little sightseeing. It is good to have someone who knows around the place if you fall sick during the trek. Hire porters if your backpack is heavy and cannot carry it yourself. You don’t need one if you are strong enough. 

You will have a chance to visit numerous Buddhist monasteries and experience their life, culture, history, and tradition during the Everest base camp trek. Trekking all by yourself is the cheapest option if you are on a tight budget. It includes booking domestic flights from Lukla to finding a place to stay at every stop.
